Designing a custom emerald necklace is a journey that blends artistry, precision, and the magic of sourcing rare gemstones. This blog is the first in a series detailing the creation of a stunning emerald and diamond necklace. Each step in the process was a labour of love, from the initial client enquiry to the meticulous selection, sourcing, and setting of the gems.
Client Enquiry: The Vision Takes Shape
The journey began with a simple but intriguing question: “Can you make this dream design a reality?” A client approached me with a vision for an exquisite necklace featuring emeralds and diamonds, intricately arranged in alternating clusters and flower motifs. With such a detailed concept in mind, I knew this project would require an extraordinary level of craftsmanship and a touch of ingenuity.
Selection and Design: Bringing Ideas to Life
The client’s request for alternating emerald and diamond clusters in a floral-inspired pattern set the tone for the design process. Every detail was carefully considered, ensuring the design would highlight the natural beauty of the gemstones while achieving a harmonious balance between elegance and sophistication.
Sourcing Emeralds: A Global Search
Sourcing the perfect emeralds for this project was the most challenging aspect of the process. Matching gemstones in size, shape, color tone, and clarity is no small feat—especially when working with a gemstone as unique as emerald. Emeralds are prized for their vibrant green hues, but their natural inclusions and variations make it difficult to find a perfectly matched set.
This search turned into a global endeavor. Leveraging my network of gemstone suppliers, I reached out to contacts worldwide, from Europe to Asia, and eventually, New York. It was there that my trusted supplier, with the help of a collaboration between various sources, managed to curate a set of emeralds that were not only stunning but also perfectly matched.
I’ll never forget their words when they finally secured the set: “There won’t be another set like this on the market worldwide!” These rare, matched emeralds became the heart of this necklace, their brilliance unmatched and irreplaceable.
Sourcing Diamonds: Precision Matters
While sourcing diamonds was relatively less complicated, it still required precision and attention to detail. Diamonds for this design had to meet the highest grading standards, ensuring exceptional brilliance. Each diamond also had to match the exact size requirements with no more than a 0.05mm variation, as the design’s intricate patterns demanded precise alignment.
Setting the Stones: A Claw-Set Masterpiece
The final design incorporated a double gallery setting style, enhancing the necklace’s structure and elegance. I opted for an all-claw setting to allow maximum light to pass through the gems, amplifying their natural brilliance. Each link was meticulously crafted, ensuring the emeralds and diamonds were securely held while maintaining a delicate, timeless look.
The journey of creating this necklace was as unique as the piece itself. From the initial enquiry to sourcing rare gems and achieving a flawless setting, every step reflected the dedication and passion behind bespoke jewellery design.
Stay tuned for the next blog in this series, where I’ll dive deeper into the craftsmanship and techniques that brought this emerald necklace to life.
